Ankeny’s The Simple Greek is giving free gyros to its first 100 customers on grand opening

A build-your-own style Greek restaurant in Ankeny will offer free gyros to the first 100 people in line during its grand opening.

The Simple Greek will hold its grand opening starting at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 21 at 1550 N. Ankeny Blvd., in the suite formerly occupied by Zombie Burger + Shake Lab. The restaurant is open 9 p.m. daily.

The restaurant’s concept uses an assembly line style, similar to Chipotle or Pancheros, but with Mediterranean food. Customers begin with a bowl or pita and proceed down an assembly line to add their ingredients and toppings.

Customers can choose from proteins including traditional gyro meat, chicken gyro meat, grilled steak, grilled chicken, lentils, falafel and Mediterranean shrimp. A variety of vegetables, toppings and Greek sauces are also available.

Side dishes include roasted potatoes, fries and dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), as well as desserts like rizogalo (Greek rice pudding), baklava, baklava cheesecake and chocolate chip cookies.

This is The Simple Greek’s first Iowa location. The franchise operates more than 30 restaurants nationwide and expects to reach 50 by the end of the year.
